Spring is one of the best times to discover a Sardinia that offers much more than the sea. The days grow longer, the interior turns green again and it becomes easier to combine villages, hiking, archaeology and cities. Swimming is not always the main goal, but that is exactly why a spring trip can take you through areas that are often overlooked in high summer.
Why choose Sardinia in spring
Between March and June the landscape changes quickly. The countryside and mountains are greener, temperatures are better for walking and many villages can be explored without the pressure of peak season. It is an ideal time for a slower itinerary that combines the coast with the interior.
The weather can be changeable, especially in March and April. The best strategy is always to have an alternative: a hiking day can become a visit to Cagliari, Nuoro, Alghero or an archaeological site if conditions are not suitable.
Bosa, Castelsardo and the villages of northern Sardinia
Bosa is particularly well suited to a spring trip. The colourful houses along the Temo, Serravalle Castle and the coastal road towards Alghero create an itinerary that does not depend on beach weather. Castelsardo offers a compact old town, views over the Gulf of Asinara and traditional craftsmanship.
In Gallura, Aggius and Tempio Pausania reveal a landscape of granite, cork oaks and inland villages. They are perfect stops to combine with the coast when windy weather makes a day by the sea less appealing.
Ogliastra: Ulassai, Gairo Vecchio and the Tacchi
Ogliastra takes on a different character in spring. Ulassai, Gairo Vecchio, Osini and the Tacchi make it possible to build days around hiking, art and villages. Temperatures are generally far better suited to the trails than in the height of summer.
Pedra Longa and the Baunei Coast can also be enjoyed without planning a full beach day. More technical routes should always be approached with suitable preparation and after checking conditions.
Barbagia and the Supramonte
Oliena, Orgosolo, Nuoro and the Supramonte are especially rewarding in spring. Su Gologone, the Lanaittu valley and the trails at the foot of Monte Corrasi let you combine nature and culture. Long hikes or routes with significant elevation gain should only be attempted with the right experience or with a qualified guide.
Archaeology: Su Nuraxi, Tharros and sacred wells
Spring is ideal for visiting open-air archaeological sites. Su Nuraxi in Barumini, Tharros, the Sacred Well of Santa Cristina, Nora and Monte d’Accoddi can all be included in regional itineraries without the intense heat of July and August.
The best approach is not to pack too many sites into the same day: a major archaeological complex works better when paired with a village or a walk through the surrounding landscape.
Cagliari and Alghero: ideal cities for changeable days
Cagliari and Alghero are two reliable bases when the weather is unsettled. Both let you move from the historic centre to the sea in just a few minutes. Cagliari adds Poetto, Molentargius and museums; Alghero offers its bastions, Capo Caccia and the coast towards Bosa.
The sea in spring: how to enjoy it
From May onwards beach days become more frequent, although the water can still be cool and the wind can change conditions quickly. Cala Brandinchi, Tuerredda, Porto Giunco and the beaches of Ogliastra are beautiful even simply for a walk or an outdoor lunch.
A 7-day itinerary
- 2 days between Cagliari and southern Sardinia.
- 2 days between Barumini, Oristano and the Sinis Peninsula.
- 1 day in Bosa.
- 2 days between Alghero and Capo Caccia.
Alternatively, choose an entirely eastern itinerary through Ogliastra, Nuoro and the Supramonte to reduce driving distances.
Frequently asked questions
Can you swim in spring? It depends on the month and the conditions. It is more likely in May and June, but should never be taken for granted.
Do you need to book far in advance? Less than in August, although long weekends, public holidays and events can quickly increase demand.
What is the main advantage? Being able to combine the sea, hiking, villages and archaeology without building the whole trip around beaches.
March, April, May and June are not the same kind of spring
In March the trip is still strongly focused on cities, archaeology and nature, with days that can be cool and changeable. April is excellent for walking and exploring the interior, although holiday weekends can bring more visitors. May is one of the most balanced months: long days, landscapes that are still green and the first truly beach-friendly weather. June already feels close to summer, especially on the coast, but is generally still better for excursions than July and August.
How to choose an area based on your interests
For hiking and nature, choose Ogliastra, the Supramonte or inland Gallura. For a cultural trip, Cagliari, Oristano, Barumini and Alghero work very well. If you want to alternate beaches and villages without driving too far, southern Sardinia and the North West are two very complete options. The most important thing is not to cross the island every day just because the roads are quieter than in summer.
