Serravalle Castle: History and Legends above Bosa
Serravalle Castle, also known as the Malaspina Castle, rises above the medieval town of Bosa in west-central Sardinia. Traditionally founded in the early 12th century by the Tuscan Malaspina family, the fortress dominates the old town from Serravalle hill and has become one of Bosa’s defining landmarks.
A castle of history and legend
The Malaspina foundation
The Malaspina family established itself in Sardinia during the Middle Ages and built the castle as a symbol of power and control. Local legends tell of secret passages between the fortress and the town below, together with darker stories of jealousy and family intrigue.
The castle structure
Serravalle Castle changed over the centuries as Bosa passed through different political phases. Medieval walls, towers and later Aragonese additions preserve visible traces of this long evolution and of the strategic importance of the hill above the Temo.
A heritage site preserved through time
Although the fortress gradually lost its military role, important sections survive today. Inside the walls stands the church of Nostra Signora de sos Regnos Altos, known for its remarkable medieval frescoes dating from the 14th and 15th centuries.
Bosa: panoramic views between past and present
From the walls of Serravalle Castle, visitors can enjoy sweeping views over Bosa, from the colourful houses along the Temo River to the old tanneries and Ponte Vecchio connecting the two banks. The history of the town is inseparable from the fortress that watched over it for centuries.
Why visit Serravalle Castle
The castle is worth visiting for the combination of medieval architecture, local history and some of the best views over Bosa and the river valley. It is an essential stop for understanding the town beyond its colourful streets.
