Cagliari
Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, combines Mediterranean history, art, sea views, modern city life and a strong food culture. At the centre of a lively metropolitan area, the city is defined by historic districts rising above the harbour, busy shopping streets and panoramic terraces such as the Bastione di Santa Croce, an excellent viewpoint at sunset.
A journey through history and art
Cagliari preserves an exceptional historical and artistic heritage across its four historic districts, each with a distinct identity. Castello, the ancient hilltop quarter, contains bastions and important buildings including the Palazzo Regio and Cathedral of Santa Maria. The medieval Elephant and San Pancrazio towers mark the entrances to the upper district, while nearby Villanova offers elegant streets, boutiques and sites such as the cloister of San Domenico.
Marina and Cagliari's multicultural heart
Descending from Castello leads to Marina, a district of historic buildings and arcades around Via Roma that reflects Cagliari's long connection with merchants, sailors and travellers. The Church of Sant'Eulalia preserves important Roman remains below street level, while nearby Stampace becomes the focus of the city every 1 May during the deeply rooted Feast of Sant'Efisio.
Nature and city beaches
Beyond the historic centre, Cagliari offers major natural attractions including the Molentargius-Saline wetlands, famous for pink flamingos, and Poetto, the city's long urban beach. Cycling, walking and birdwatching are possible around the wetlands, while Poetto combines beach life with restaurants and evening activity.
Cagliari's food culture
Cagliari's cuisine is a strong expression of southern Sardinian food traditions. Typical dishes include pasta with bottarga, burrida made with dogfish and fregula con cocciula with clams.
Why visit Cagliari
Cagliari offers a complete city break combining history, museums, panoramic viewpoints, nature, beaches and local food. It works both as a destination in its own right and as a base for exploring southern Sardinia.
