Baunei

The territory of Baunei is an extraordinary meeting point between mountains and sea. Around 40 kilometres of rugged coastline rise above emerald and turquoise water, with limestone cliffs plunging directly into the Mediterranean and opening into coves, caves and beaches that have made the Baunei Coast famous worldwide. Inland, the Supramonte adds an equally dramatic mountain landscape. Climbers are drawn to equipped routes on the vertical rock walls, while hikers and walkers find panoramic trails linking plateaus, forests and the coast.

Beaches along the Baunei Coast

Anyone who has explored the Baunei Coast is likely to remember the bright seabed of Cala Mariolu, the intense colours of Cala Biriala, the clear water of Cala Sisine, the pale sand of Cala Luna and the turquoise Piscine di Venere. The limestone pinnacle of Pedra Longa marks the southern entrance to this landscape, while Cala Goloritzè is one of its most iconic natural landmarks. Golden eagles, Eleonora's falcons, Audouin's gulls, mouflon and peregrine falcons are among the species found in this remarkable environment.

Things to see in Baunei

Baunei is far more than its beaches. Inland, the Golgo plateau offers unusual landscapes and archaeological traces. The basalt basins known as As Piscinas were probably used in nuragic ritual contexts, while nearby Su Sterru is a dramatic karst chasm associated with local traditions and ancient beliefs. The country church of San Pietro, dating to the Spanish period, stands out with its white façade against the mountain landscape. Farther south on the plateau, the monumental nuragic complex of Co' e Serra contrasts strikingly with the surrounding vegetation.

Santa Maria Navarrese

Another highlight of the municipality is Santa Maria Navarrese, a popular coastal village and one of the main departure points for boat excursions along the Baunei Coast. Its marina, restaurants and beach sit beneath a historic Spanish tower. The village also preserves important local landmarks, including the small 11th-century church of Santa Maria di Navarra and the monumental centuries-old wild olive tree beside it.

Events in Baunei

In June, Cortes Apertas offers an excellent introduction to Baunei's culture, traditions and food. Historic houses open to visitors, the old districts of Sa Succargia and Sant'Antoni come alive, and local dishes and wines are served alongside demonstrations and the traditional Sa Coua Baunesa wedding re-enactment.
