Hamlet of Baunei
Santa Maria Navarrese
Santa Maria Navarrese is the main seaside village in the municipality of Baunei and one of the most convenient bases for exploring Sardinia’s central-east coast. Its marina, seafront, small beaches, hiking routes and connections to the coves of the Baunei Coast make it suitable for both beach holidays and active trips.
The village and seafront
The village is compact and centred around the sea and marina. The seafront is easy to explore on foot and connects beaches, restaurants, services and viewpoints. The atmosphere is quieter than in larger tourist resorts, especially outside the peak summer months.
The church and Spanish tower
The medieval Church of Santa Maria di Navarra is one of the symbols of the village. Nearby stands a Spanish coastal tower built to watch over the shoreline. Together they tell the story of Santa Maria Navarrese long before the development of modern tourism.
The marina and boat excursions
Boat excursions depart from the marina towards the coves of the Baunei Coast. Cala Goloritzè, Cala Mariolu, Cala Biriala and Cala Sisine are among the best-known destinations. Access methods vary by season, sea conditions and local regulations, so it is always worth checking current information before setting out.
Hiking in the Baunei area
Santa Maria Navarrese is also a base for hiking inland and along the coast. Pedra Longa, the Supramonte of Baunei and several panoramic trails make it easy to alternate beach days with walking. More demanding routes require suitable preparation or a local guide.
When to choose Santa Maria Navarrese
It is a good destination for travellers who want to experience the Baunei Coast while keeping useful services close at hand. May, June, September and October are particularly suitable for combining the sea with hiking, while July and August offer the widest range of tourist services but also higher visitor numbers.
