Town

Orosei

Orosei is one of the most interesting towns on Sardinia’s central-east coast: a historic centre close to the sea, surrounded by the Cedrino Valley, pine woods and some of the best-known beaches of the Baronia.

Orosei historic centre

The old town preserves stone-and-lime buildings, courtyards, arches and numerous churches. The Palathos Vezzos district, around the former seat of the Curia Regni, is one of its most characteristic areas and still reflects the urban fabric of medieval and early modern Orosei. A walk through the centre is the best way to discover the cultural side of the town before heading to the coast.

Churches and historic architecture

Orosei is known for its concentration of religious buildings and for an architectural heritage that reflects the town’s historic role in the Baronia. Façades, bell towers and small oratories appear throughout the streets and can be explored on foot together with historic squares and buildings.

Orosei beaches

The municipality covers a long stretch of coastline. Marina di Orosei is the closest beach to town, while further north lie Cala Liberotto and the Bidderosa nature area, characterised by pine woods, lagoons and coves of pale sand. Access to some areas may be regulated at certain times of year, so check current information before visiting.

The Cedrino Valley and nature

The landscape around Orosei is not only coastal. The Cedrino River and the countryside of the Baronia create a very different environment from more developed seaside areas, with opportunities for excursions through nature, farmland and small inland towns.

Orosei as a travel base

Orosei is a good base for exploring central-eastern Sardinia. From here you can reach Dorgali, the Supramonte, the coast towards Siniscola and many beaches of the Baronia. It works well for multi-day stays because it allows travellers to alternate the sea, historic centre and nature itineraries.

How to plan your visit

To appreciate Orosei, it is best to separate time in the historic centre from days dedicated to the coast. In summer, check access arrangements for regulated nature areas in advance, while spring and autumn are ideal for combining beaches, walks and visits to the villages of the Baronia.
