Costa Rei
Costa Rei is one of the best-known seaside destinations in south-east Sardinia. Its long sandy coastline lies mainly within the municipality of Muravera and continues towards Castiadas, forming an almost uninterrupted coastal strip of pale beaches, small headlands and Mediterranean scrub.
The long beach of Costa Rei
The area's most recognisable feature is the broad sandy beach that stretches for kilometres along the Sarrabus coast. In many places it is wide and easy to access, making Costa Rei suitable for families as well as travellers who enjoy long walks by the sea.
The length of the coastline means that different stretches offer different experiences. Some are close to services and tourist facilities, while others retain a more natural feel.
Scoglio di Peppino and Santa Giusta
At the southern end, one of the best-known landmarks is Scoglio di Peppino, a large pale rock formation rising from shallow, transparent water near Santa Giusta. It is one of the area's iconic views and is often associated with the nearby beaches of Castiadas.
Because the coastline is geographically continuous, municipal boundaries matter little to visitors: Costa Rei, Muravera and Castiadas can be explored as one connected coastal area, stop by stop.
Capo Ferrato and the wilder coastline
Heading north, the landscape changes as you approach Capo Ferrato. Headlands, small coves, vegetation and less developed stretches of coast provide an alternative to the long main beach. It is particularly appealing for travellers who want to spend a day enjoying scenery and quieter stops.
Muravera and the Sarrabus
Costa Rei lies mainly within the municipality of Muravera, the main centre of the Sarrabus area. The town is closely linked to agriculture, citrus fruit and local traditions, offering a different perspective from the seaside resorts. Farther south, Castiadas adds beaches such as Cala Sinzias and Cala Pira, as well as the history of its former penal colony.
How to plan your stay
Costa Rei works well as a base for several days. From here you can alternate beach time with visits to Muravera and Castiadas and itineraries towards Villasimius. In high season, it is often better not to rush constantly between famous bays: a slower day on one stretch of coast can be more rewarding than a checklist of photo stops.
