Town

Castiadas

Castiadas covers a large area of the Sarrabus between mountains and sea and is known for some of the most beautiful beaches in south-east Sardinia.

A scattered municipality

Castiadas does not have one compact town centre like many Sardinian municipalities. Instead, it is made up of several villages and settlements that developed at different stages during the 20th century. This dispersed layout reflects the area's recent history and makes a car especially useful for moving between the coast, countryside and cultural sites.

The former penal colony

One of the most important places for understanding the area's modern history is the former agricultural penal colony, established in the 19th century during major land-reclamation works. The complex tells the story of a key period in Castiadas' transformation and agricultural development.

Cala Pira and Cala Sinzias

The municipal coastline includes very different beaches. Cala Pira is known for its coastal tower, pale sand and headland, while Cala Sinzias offers a longer, wider beach. Both are major destinations for travellers staying in the Sarrabus.

Costa Rei and Sant'Elmo

To the north, the municipality meets Costa Rei and includes areas such as Santa Giusta near Scoglio di Peppino. Farther south, Sant'Elmo and Monte Turno alternate sandy beaches with rocky stretches. This variety makes it easy to choose a different coastal setting each day within a relatively small area.

Sette Fratelli and the inland area

Behind the coast rise the hills of the Sette Fratelli area, covered with Mediterranean scrub and woodland. This lesser-known side of Castiadas adds hiking, viewpoints and natural environments to the trip, especially outside the hottest summer months.
