Porto Ferro
Porto Ferro is one of the largest beaches in the Nurra, within the municipality of Sassari and a short drive from Alghero. Amber-coloured sand, open sea, pine forest and three coastal towers create a landscape very different from the more sheltered bays of the Riviera del Corallo.
A wide bay in the Nurra
The beach stretches for around two kilometres and has a distinctive golden-amber colour. Its size and open landscape create a sense of space even during busier periods.
Surf and wind
Porto Ferro is exposed to wind and waves and is therefore well known among surfers and windsurfers. The same conditions mean swimmers should take extra care and always assess the sea before entering.
The three coastal towers
Three watchtowers overlook the bay, recalling the coastal defence system built during the Spanish period. Paths around the towers add a historical and panoramic element to a beach visit.
Lake Baratz
Behind the beach lies Lake Baratz, Sardinia’s only natural freshwater lake. Pine forest, wetland and coastline can therefore be combined in the same nature-focused itinerary.
Porto Ferro in north-western Sardinia
Its position makes Porto Ferro easy to combine with Alghero, Porto Conte and Argentiera. It is an ideal stop for travellers looking for a wilder side of Sardinia’s north-west coast.
