Town
Sassari
Sassari is one of Sardinia's major historic cities, a cultural centre in the north of the island and an excellent starting point for exploring both the inland area and the Gulf of Asinara.
Things to see in Sassari
The historic centre preserves squares, palaces and churches reflecting centuries of history. Piazza d'Italia is one of the city's symbolic spaces, while the Fontana di Rosello is among Sassari's most recognisable landmarks. The Cathedral of San Nicola and the streets of the medieval core are also worth exploring.
History, museums and traditions
Sassari's cultural heritage ranges from archaeology to art. The Museo Nazionale Sanna contains important collections from ancient Sardinia, while just outside the city is Monte d'Accoddi, an extraordinary pre-nuragic complex. One of the city's most deeply rooted traditions is the annual Discesa dei Candelieri.
Sassari and northern Sardinia
Sassari is well positioned for exploring the north-west. Porto Torres, Stintino, Asinara, Castelsardo and the Gulf of Asinara coastline are all within easy reach. The city suits travellers who want to alternate culture and food with days by the sea.
