Gairo
Built on the side of a steep gorge at almost 800 metres above sea level, modern Gairo owes its present location to the devastating landslides and floods of 1951. Residents were forced to evacuate and permanently abandon Gairo Vecchio, a ghost village that still preserves an eerie fascination. The municipality stretches from the Gennargentu mountains to the sea and includes streams, dense forests rich in wildlife, limestone walls and beautiful beaches.
Things to see in Gairo
In the mountain area of Ogliastra, the imposing peak of Perda 'e Liana rises dramatically above the landscape. This sheer dolomitic tower, popular with climbers, is one of the highest and most distinctive of the Tacchi d'Ogliastra. Other natural attractions include Taquisara cave and the natural pools of Accu 'e Axina near Monte Ferru, where fresh water forms scenic bathing spots in summer. Archaeological remains are scattered across the territory, including the settlements of Is Tostoinus and Perdu Isu and the Giants' Tomb of Taquisara.
Marina di Gairo
The coastline of Marina di Gairo lies away from the busiest beaches and is characterised by red porphyry cliffs meeting clear water. Coccorrocci is a distinctive pebble beach covered with smooth stones in many colours. Travellers willing to follow a moderately demanding coastal path can also reach Su Sirboni, a small cove of fine sand and shallow water framed by red rock and lush Mediterranean vegetation.
