Hamlet of Domus de Maria
Chia
Chia is a coastal destination in the municipality of Domus de Maria in southern Sardinia, known for dunes, lagoons, headlands and some of the island's most famous beaches. Its landscape combines sea and nature with historical traces linked to ancient Bithia and the coastal watchtower.
Chia Tower and ancient Bithia
The tower dominates the headland and is one of the area's most recognisable landmarks. The hill and surrounding land preserve traces of ancient Bithia, a settlement that shows how long this coastline was inhabited before modern tourism developed.
Around the tower, landscape and history are concentrated in a small area: sea, lagoons, dunes and archaeological remains can all be seen together.
Su Giudeu
Su Giudeu is one of Chia's best-known beaches. Its broad stretch of sand, dunes and the small islet offshore create an instantly recognisable setting. It is very busy in high season, so arriving early can make the experience more enjoyable.
The dunes are fragile environments and visitors should always use designated paths and walkways to protect vegetation and sand systems.
Cala Cipolla and other beaches
Cala Cipolla is a more sheltered cove enclosed by headlands and Mediterranean scrub. Porto Campana, Sa Colonia and other nearby beaches offer different options without long drives. Wind and sea conditions can change the character of each bay, so it is worth keeping plans flexible.
Lagoons, dunes and coastal nature
Wetlands used by water birds lie behind several beaches, while junipers and Mediterranean scrub cover dunes and headlands. Chia's appeal therefore comes not only from the colour of the sea, but from the concentration of different coastal ecosystems within just a few kilometres.
Chia on a southern Sardinia itinerary
Chia fits naturally between Pula and Teulada. On a southern Sardinia trip, Nora and Pula can be combined with Chia in one day, or you can dedicate a full day to the beaches before continuing towards Tuerredda and Teulada the following day. The coastal road west is part of the experience itself.
