Town
Calasetta
Calasetta occupies the north-western tip of Sant'Antioco island and is one of the Sulcis area’s most distinctive seaside towns. White houses, Tabarkino traditions, the harbour, a coastal tower and sandy beaches shape a landscape facing the island of San Pietro.
The Tabarkino town
Calasetta was founded in the second half of the 18th century by families from the Tabarkino community. Its regular street plan, pale houses and elements of local language and cuisine still reflect this history.
The tower
The Savoy-era tower overlooks the centre and predates the foundation of the town by a few years. From the higher ground there are views over the harbour, the channel towards San Pietro and part of the coast.
The beaches
Sottotorre, La Salina and Spiaggia Grande are the main beaches close to town. Dunes, junipers and clear shallow water offer different coastal settings without long journeys.
Mangiabarche and the western coast
Further west the coastline becomes rockier. The Mangiabarche lighthouse, already featured on the portal, is one of the area’s most photographed landmarks, especially with rough seas or around sunset.
Calasetta in your itinerary
Calasetta connects naturally with the rest of Sant'Antioco and with Carloforte by ferry. In the Trip Planner it can be a strong base for one or two days exploring the Sulcis archipelago.
