Town
Sant’Antioco
Sant'Antioco is the main town on the island of the same name in the Sulcis and one of Sardinia's most rewarding destinations for travellers interested in archaeology, Mediterranean history and the sea. Ancient Sulky left traces spanning almost three thousand years.
The town and ancient Sulky
The modern town stands on the site of an ancient Phoenician settlement known as Sulky or Sulci, later Punic and Roman. Its harbour position made it an important centre for Mediterranean trade, and archaeological remains are still woven into the modern urban landscape.
Archaeological Museum and tophet
The Ferruccio Barreca Archaeological Museum displays finds from the settlement, necropolises and tophet, offering a chronological overview of the island's history. The nearby tophet is one of the key places for understanding Sant'Antioco's Phoenician and Punic period.
Basilica and catacombs
In the town centre stands the basilica dedicated to Sant'Antioco Martire, one of the island's most important religious sites. The complex and its catacombs document the transition from antiquity to the early Christian period, adding another layer to the historical visit.
The island's coastline
Sant'Antioco Island offers very different coastal landscapes, with beaches, cliffs and small bays alternating around the shoreline. Maladroxia is one of the best-known seaside areas, while other stretches are often quieter than the major resorts of southern Sardinia.
Sant'Antioco and the Sulcis
The town is a good base for exploring Calasetta, Carloforte, the Iglesiente and the archaeological sites of the Sulcis. Over several days, travellers can combine archaeology, towns, coast and food traditions in an itinerary very different from Sardinia's most tourism-focused areas.
How to plan your visit
Sant'Antioco works well for a stay of two or more days: one day can focus on archaeology and the town centre, another on the island's coastline. Travellers continuing towards Calasetta and Carloforte can build a complete Sulcis archipelago itinerary without constantly changing accommodation.
