Town

Buggerru

Buggerru is a former mining town on Sardinia's south-west coast. Developed in the 19th century around lead and zinc extraction, it now combines industrial archaeology, a small harbour, beaches and one of the most dramatic stretches of the Iglesiente coastline.

A town built around the mines

Buggerru grew rapidly in the second half of the 19th century with the development of the Malfidano mine. Houses arranged along the valley and surviving industrial structures still reflect a history deeply connected to mining.

Galleria Henry

Galleria Henry is one of Buggerru's main attractions. Once used to transport ore, the tunnel now allows visitors to enter the mining landscape through a route cut into the rock. Opening times and visiting arrangements should be checked before arrival.

The harbour and town centre

The small harbour lies directly below the town and contributes to Buggerru's unusual urban layout. Viewpoints and stretches of coast are easy to reach from the centre, making the town pleasant to explore even without a fixed route.

Cala Domestica and the coast

Nearby is Cala Domestica, already featured on Life in Sardegna and one of the best-known bays in the Iglesiente. Cliffs, former mining infrastructure and open sea combine to create one of Sardinia's most distinctive coastal landscapes.

Buggerru on an Iglesiente itinerary

Buggerru connects naturally with Masua, Porto Flavia, Pan di Zucchero and Nebida. The panoramic roads take longer than the map distances suggest and deserve one or more days at a relaxed pace.
