Bear Rock
Bear Rock is one of Gallura’s most recognisable natural monuments. The huge granite formation, sculpted by weather and erosion, dominates Capo d’Orso and offers broad views over the sea and La Maddalena Archipelago.
A natural granite sculpture
Erosion has shaped the granite into a profile that resembles a bear looking out to sea. Its distinctive form made Capo d’Orso a landmark known to sailors for centuries.
The trail
The rock is reached by a short uphill path. The walk is not long, but in hot weather it is still important to carry water and wear suitable footwear.
The panorama
From the upper part of the headland, views open across Palau, La Maddalena and the surrounding islands. The panorama is as much a reason to visit as the rock formation itself.
History and fortifications
The Palau area also preserves military fortifications and observation points. Capo d’Orso can therefore fit into an itinerary combining nature, local history and the coast.
Palau and Porto Pollo
Bear Rock combines very well with central Palau or Porto Pollo. In the Trip Planner it works as a strong panoramic stop in the morning or late afternoon.
