Tavolara Island
Tavolara is a dramatic limestone island rising just off Sardinia’s north-eastern coast. Its steep profile dominates the landscape between Olbia, Loiri Porto San Paolo and San Teodoro and lies at the heart of the Tavolara–Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area.
An island that defines the north-east coast
Tavolara is about four kilometres long and rises to more than 500 metres, creating an unmistakable silhouette visible from the coast between Olbia and San Teodoro. Its huge limestone mass contrasts sharply with the smaller granite islands nearby.
The Marine Protected Area
The island forms part of the Tavolara–Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area, which also includes Molara, Molarotto and a broad stretch of protected coast. Posidonia meadows, rocky seabeds and island habitats make the area especially important for biodiversity.
Sea and hiking
The accessible areas of Tavolara are ideal for a day by the sea and short walks, while routes towards the higher parts of the island are much more demanding and may require experience or qualified guidance. Views from the island and surrounding coast are among the most spectacular in Gallura.
How to include Tavolara in your trip
Tavolara combines naturally with Porto San Paolo, Olbia, San Teodoro, Capo Coda Cavallo and the beaches of the marine reserve. Access options and any seasonal restrictions should always be checked in line with current protected-area rules.
