Porto Pino Dunes: Sardinia’s white sand landscape

The Dunes of Porto Pino, also known as Is Arenas Biancas, are one of the most distinctive natural landscapes in south-west Sardinia. Large dunes of fine white sand rise near the coast, creating a striking contrast with the turquoise sea and surrounding Mediterranean vegetation.

A remarkable dune landscape

The dunes

The dune system extends for over a kilometre in places, with some formations rising to impressive heights. White sand, blue sea, sea lilies and junipers create one of the most recognisable landscapes in this part of Sardinia.

Flora and wildlife

Mediterranean scrub surrounds the dunes, while nearby wetlands provide habitat for migratory birds, including flamingos. The dunes are fragile and should only be crossed where access is permitted.

Services and activities

Beach services

The Porto Pino area has seasonal facilities that may include parking, refreshments and beach equipment rental. The sea is popular for swimming and snorkelling, while windier days can attract water-sports enthusiasts.
