Town

Gonnesa

Gonnesa is a town in the Iglesiente between Iglesias and Carbonia, just a few kilometres from a long sandy coastline. Mining history, Nuragic archaeology, wetlands and beaches make it possible to build varied itineraries within a relatively compact area.

The town and its mining history

Mining deeply shaped the modern history of Gonnesa. Former mines and abandoned workers’ settlements recall the area’s important role in the mining industry of the Sulcis-Iglesiente.

Marina di Gonnesa

The coastline extends for several kilometres and includes Porto Paglia, Plag'e Mesu and Funtanamare, the latter already featured on the portal. Golden sand and open sea characterise the whole bay.

Nuraghe Seruci

The area contains one of the major Nuragic complexes of the Sulcis, with a nuraghe, settlement and funerary structures. It is a particularly worthwhile stop for travellers interested in archaeology.

Sa Masa and nature

Behind the coast are pine woods and wetlands visited by many bird species. This natural dimension adds another layer to an area often described mainly through its mines and beaches.

How to include Gonnesa in your trip

Gonnesa connects Iglesias, Carbonia and the coast. In the Trip Planner it works best as a base for Nuraghe Seruci and Marina di Gonnesa, rather than as a compulsory stop when those interests are not selected.
