Caprera Island

Caprera is the second-largest island in La Maddalena Archipelago and one of the most varied destinations in northern Sardinia. Beaches, hiking trails, Mediterranean scrub, military fortifications and places linked to Giuseppe Garibaldi make it possible to combine sea, nature and history in the same day.

An island connected to La Maddalena

Caprera is linked to La Maddalena by a bridge, so no private boat is needed to reach it. Internal roads lead to different parts of the island, but in high season parking and access to the most popular areas should be planned carefully.

Cala Coticcio and the island’s coves

Cala Coticcio is one of the archipelago’s most famous places, known for pale granite and exceptionally clear water. The area is protected and access, reservations or guided accompaniment may be regulated. Always check the latest park rules before planning your visit.

Garibaldi on Caprera

Giuseppe Garibaldi spent an important part of his life on Caprera. The Garibaldi Compendium preserves buildings, rooms and personal objects connected with his years on the island and is one of the archipelago’s most significant historical attractions.

Trails and fortifications

Caprera has a network of roads and paths crossing pine woods, Mediterranean scrub and granite hills. Military structures and fortifications also reflect the strategic importance of the archipelago. Hiking plans should be adapted to the season, weather and personal fitness.

How much time to spend on Caprera

For a first visit, allow at least a full day. Trying to see Caprera, La Maddalena and all the archipelago’s beaches in one day turns the experience into a rush. In the Trip Planner, Caprera should therefore be treated as the main destination, with only a few carefully selected stops.
