Fortezza di Monte Altura
Monte Altura Fortress is a large 19th-century military complex built on the heights above Palau to control the sea and the La Maddalena Archipelago. Its granite architecture and panoramic position make it one of the most interesting cultural sights on the Gallura coast.
A fortress overlooking the sea
The fortress occupies a commanding position once used to monitor the Strait of Bonifacio and the archipelago. Today, the sweeping views are one of the main reasons to visit.
Military architecture
Walls, ramps, gun platforms and interior rooms show how the fortifications were integrated directly into the surrounding granite rock.
Defending the archipelago
Monte Altura formed part of a wider defensive network spread between Palau and La Maddalena, making the site a useful introduction to the strategic history of the whole area.
Palau
Palau town centre and Roccia dell'Orso are nearby. The fortress adds a historical dimension to a day otherwise focused on the coast and sea.
