Is Arutas: Sardinia’s famous quartz beach
Is Arutas is one of the most distinctive beaches on Sardinia’s west coast, on the Sinis Peninsula. Instead of ordinary sand, the shore is covered with small rounded quartz grains in shades of white, pink and green, creating the famous “grains of rice” effect.
A remarkable natural landscape
The quartz grains
Is Arutas is famous for its polished quartz grains, whose colours range from bright white to pale pink and green. This unusual shoreline is one of the defining landscapes of the Sinis coastal area.
The sea
The clear water changes from emerald to blue and turquoise depending on the light. The seabed becomes deeper relatively quickly in places, so swimmers should always assess conditions carefully.

Wind and nature
The west coast is exposed to wind, attracting windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts. The wider Sinis area also contains lagoons and wetlands that are important for birdlife.
