Town
Oristano
Oristano is the main city of central-western Sardinia, rich in history and traditions and a natural gateway to the Sinis Peninsula, lagoons and the beaches of the gulf.
The historic centre
The heart of the city centres on Piazza Eleonora d’Arborea and the streets of the old town. Torre di Mariano recalls Oristano’s former defensive system, while the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, churches and historic buildings reflect the city’s important role during the Middle Ages.
Sartiglia and local traditions
Sartiglia is Oristano’s most famous event, an equestrian tradition held during Carnival that attracts visitors from across Sardinia. Local food and Vernaccia wine are also part of the city’s identity and its close connection with the surrounding territory.
From the gulf to the Sinis Peninsula
Just a few kilometres from the centre are Torregrande and the Gulf of Oristano. Continuing towards the Sinis Peninsula brings you to Cabras, Tharros, San Giovanni di Sinis, Is Arutas and other destinations that make Oristano an excellent base for exploring Sardinia’s west coast.
