Oliena
Oliena lies at the foot of Monte Corrasi in the heart of central Sardinia and is one of the best gateways to the Supramonte landscape. Nature, archaeology, traditions and local products come together in a remarkably rich territory.
The village of Oliena
Oliena stretches below the limestone massif of Monte Corrasi and preserves a strong Barbagia identity. Churches, traditional houses, courtyards and village streets reflect a local culture still closely connected to farming, livestock and craftsmanship. It is an excellent destination for travellers who want to combine village life with excursions into Sardinia's interior.
Su Gologone
A few kilometres from the village lies Su Gologone, a spectacular karst spring recognised as a regional natural monument. Water rises from the depths of the Supramonte's underground system, creating an intensely coloured resurgence surrounded by vegetation. It is one of the best-known natural attractions in central Sardinia.
Monte Corrasi and Lanaitho Valley
Monte Corrasi, the highest peak of the Oliena Supramonte, dominates the village and offers hiking routes through a limestone environment rich in plant species. Nearby Lanaitho Valley leads towards caves, archaeological sites and striking mountain scenery. Many routes require good preparation, and experienced guides are recommended for the more demanding sections.
Archaeology and caves
The territory preserves evidence spanning thousands of years. Lanaitho Valley includes places such as Grotta Corbeddu and the nuragic area of Sa Sedda 'e Sos Carros, together with karst caves and settlements that reveal the long human presence in the Supramonte.
Nepente wine, olive oil and traditions
Oliena is also known for Nepente Cannonau wine and olive oil, products that express the close relationship between the community and its land. A visit can therefore combine nature, culture and food and wine, making the village an ideal base for discovering inland Sardinia at a slower pace.
How to plan your visit
Oliena is best enjoyed with at least a full day, dividing your time between the village, Su Gologone and the surrounding territory. Hiking on Monte Corrasi and routes through Lanaitho Valley require more time and careful planning. The village also works very well as a stop between Nuoro, Dorgali and the Supramonte.
