Town

Lanusei

One of Ogliastra's main administrative centres, Lanusei overlooks the valley from a rocky slope crossed by steep streets and stairways. Narrow stone lanes and panoramic terraces open towards unspoilt landscapes and, in the distance, the sea. Surrounded by oak woods and forests, the town offers travellers a chance to move beyond Ogliastra's beaches and discover an inland culture whose ancient traces include Domus de Janas and Giants' Tombs hidden among the woodland.

On a granite plateau at more than 1,000 metres above sea level, dense holm-oak woodland surrounds one of the area's most atmospheric archaeological complexes, including the Gennacili nuraghe, two Giants' Tombs and two sacred springs. The forest also has picnic areas and a small refreshment point. Nearby, the F. Caliumi Astronomical Observatory on Monte Armidda offers an excellent location for observing the night sky away from major light pollution.
