Girasole

Girasole lies on a broad plain surrounded by varied Mediterranean vegetation. Its quiet setting makes it a good base for travellers looking for a relaxed stay close to nature. The nearby lagoon is an important habitat for many bird species and is particularly interesting for birdwatching.

Girasole Beach

About one kilometre from the town centre, you can relax at the secluded Girasole beach, also known as Lido delle Rose. This wild, uncrowded stretch of coast is ideal for those looking for a quieter beach. A cool pine grove separates it from the road and provides welcome shade for picnics on hot summer days.

Things to see in Girasole

One of the oldest settlements in Ogliastra, Girasole has occupied the same area for more than 3,000 years. One of the clearest traces of this long history is the Santu Tomau nuraghe, which overlooks the surrounding plain from a granite rise. The area was strategically important in Roman and Carthaginian times and later experienced successive periods of conflict and rule before becoming an active centre of trade under Pisa and Aragon.

Events in Girasole

One of the town’s main events is Pratzas de Gelisuli, when streets and courtyards come alive with local food, photography and art exhibitions, folk performances and live music. Usually held in April as part of the Primavera in Ogliastra programme, the event offers an introduction to the history and customs of Girasole, with Ogliastra cuisine—and especially culurgiones—playing a central role.
