Gavoi

Gavoi is a village in the Barbagia di Ollolai area, surrounded by mountains, woodland and streams, with a granite-built historic centre and Lake Gusana only a short distance away.

The granite village

Gavoi's historic centre lies at almost 800 metres above sea level and preserves granite houses, lanes and views over the surrounding valleys. The compact village and mountain setting create an atmosphere very different from Sardinia's coastal resorts, especially enjoyable in spring and autumn.

Churches and traditions

The parish church of San Gavino and other places of worship reflect the community's religious heritage. Traditional festivals, music and costumes remain important in village life and offer an insight into a part of Barbagia that is still strongly connected to its roots.

Lake Gusana

A few kilometres from the village lies Lake Gusana, an artificial reservoir surrounded by forests and hills. Its shores are popular for walks, outdoor activities and quiet breaks. The lake broadens Gavoi's natural appeal and is one of the most recognisable places in the surrounding area.

Gennargentu and nature

Gavoi is surrounded by high ground leading towards the Gennargentu massif. Holm oak, downy oak and chestnut woods shape the landscape, while secondary roads and trails cross an inland environment of grazing land, springs and small streams.

Local flavours and culture

Local cuisine reflects Barbagia's pastoral traditions, with cheeses, bread, fresh pasta and meat dishes. Gavoi is also known for cultural initiatives that have strengthened its identity around literature and music, making the village interesting well beyond its folklore events.
