Hamlet of Dorgali

Cala Gonone

Cala Gonone is the main seaside resort in the Dorgali area and one of the most important gateways to Sardinia's central-eastern coast. Its harbour, small beaches, limestone cliffs and access to caves and coves reached by sea or on foot make it an especially complete base for travellers interested in the sea, nature and outdoor activities.

The town and harbour

Cala Gonone stretches along the coast below the Dorgali Supramonte. The harbour is the operational heart of the resort, with numerous boat excursions and services departing for the coves along the coast. The seafront, accommodation and visitor services make Cala Gonone practical for stays of several days.

The resort is closely connected to inland Dorgali, only a short distance away. The two work especially well together: Cala Gonone for the sea and coastal activities, Dorgali for craftsmanship, archaeology, caves and Supramonte landscapes.

Beaches near Cala Gonone

Beaches and coves are easily reached around the town, while farther south Cala Fuili marks the end of the coastal road and is one of the access points to trails in the coastal Supramonte. Continuing by boat or on hiking routes leads to some of the most famous coves on this stretch of Sardinia.

The terrain makes it important to choose beaches according to the kind of day you want: some are accessible by car or on foot, while others require a boat trip or demanding hike. Always check sea conditions, access rules and trail difficulty before setting out.

Boat trips, caves and coastline

Cala Gonone is above all a departure point for exploring a coast dominated by high limestone cliffs, caves and small bays. Excursions range from shared boats to private services, with options varying according to season and sea conditions.

The Dorgali area also contains important caves and karst systems. Ispinigoli Cave, inland from the coast, combines well with a day that mixes marine scenery and geology.

Hiking and the Supramonte

The landscape behind Cala Gonone is crossed by trails requiring very different levels of preparation. Some link Cala Fuili with other coastal areas, while longer routes enter the Supramonte and should not be underestimated. Heat, elevation gain, rocky ground and lack of services can make even apparently short distances demanding.

Travellers unfamiliar with the area should use local guides for the more complex routes. Easier walks can be combined with beach time, especially in spring and autumn.

When to choose Cala Gonone

Cala Gonone is ideal for travellers who want to combine beaches, boat trips, hiking and inland excursions. The resort is very busy in peak summer; May, June, September and October often offer better conditions for walking and outdoor activities. For a first stay, allow at least three days to experience both the coast and the Dorgali area.
