Aritzo

Aritzo is a mountain village in Barbagia di Belvì, surrounded by chestnut woods and forests on the edge of the Gennargentu. Its historic snow trade, natural springs, old centre and food traditions reveal a side of inland Sardinia very different from the coast.

The mountain village

Aritzo stands at around 800 metres above sea level and preserves paved streets, stone houses and views that follow the shape of the valley. It is well suited to travellers looking for a slower pace and a genuine mountain atmosphere.

The historic snow tradition

For centuries, local people collected and stored snow from the Gennargentu in traditional snow pits, later selling it during the warmer months. This unusual activity remains one of the most distinctive elements of Aritzo's identity.

Chestnut woods and springs

Chestnut forests and numerous springs surround the village. In autumn the landscape changes colour, while woodland products become central to local cuisine and seasonal events.

Historic centre and traditions

The parish church of San Michele, old houses and traditional workshops reflect a village closely connected to craftsmanship and the culture of Barbagia.

Aritzo in your itinerary

Belvì, Desulo and the Gennargentu are all nearby. In the Trip Planner, Aritzo works well as the main village in a day focused on mountains, local traditions and food.
