Valle della Luna of Aggius

Valle della Luna near Aggius, also known as the Plain of the Great Stones, is a landscape dominated by enormous granite boulders, pasture and Mediterranean scrub. It is one of the clearest expressions of the geology that shapes Alta Gallura.

The Plain of the Great Stones

The valley floor is scattered with boulders and granite formations sculpted by erosion and weather. The sheer scale of the landscape is what makes this area especially striking.

Granite and Gallura

The same stone used throughout the villages of Gallura appears here in its natural forms. The valley therefore helps visitors understand the link between geology, traditional architecture and the regional landscape.

Walks and viewpoints

Roads and walking routes offer different views across the valley. Visitors should respect private property and avoid entering areas that are not open or authorised for access.

Aggius

The village of Aggius is only a short distance away and is the natural complement to the valley. Its historic centre and museums can easily be combined with the landscape in the same day.

When to visit

Morning and late-afternoon light are particularly effective at bringing out the shapes and colours of the granite. Spring and autumn also offer more comfortable temperatures for exploring.
