Tiscali Nuragic Village

Tiscali is one of Sardinia’s most unusual archaeological sites: the remains of an ancient settlement are hidden inside a large sinkhole in the heart of the Supramonte.

A village hidden inside the mountain

The site lies inside a cavity created when the roof of an ancient cave collapsed. This natural enclosure protects the settlement remains and creates an atmosphere very different from a conventional open-air archaeological site.

The archaeological structures

Inside the sinkhole are the remains of buildings constructed with small stones and locally available materials. Research has revealed a complex history of occupation linked to communities living in the Supramonte during the Nuragic period and later phases.

The hike to Tiscali

Tiscali cannot be reached by car: visiting requires a hike through the Supramonte. Main routes approach from the Lanaittu and Oddoene valleys and include climbs, uneven ground and sections requiring care. A local guide can be especially useful for travellers unfamiliar with the area.

Between Dorgali and Oliena

Monte Tiscali lies on the boundary between Dorgali and Oliena. The archaeological site is managed within Dorgali’s cultural network and is therefore linked to Dorgali as the main municipality in the database, while its geographical connection with Oliena and the Lanaittu valley should remain clear.

How to prepare

Carry enough water, wear proper hiking footwear and check the weather before setting out. Confirm site opening, any restrictions and current trail conditions. In summer, avoid the hottest part of the day.
