Temple of Antas
The Temple of Antas stands in a valley of the Iglesiente, in the territory of Fluminimaggiore, and is one of the best places in Sardinia to understand the continuity between Nuragic, Punic and Roman cultures.
A sacred place for different civilisations
The area was used for worship long before the Roman period. Over time the sanctuary changed form and was associated with local and Punic deities, eventually leading to the Roman temple dedicated to Sardus Pater.
The Roman temple
The surviving building, with its columns and monumental layout, gives a strong sense of the sanctuary’s original scale. Its isolated position among hills and vegetation is a major part of the experience and highlights the relationship between architecture and landscape.
Archaeology in the valley
Traces around the temple belong to earlier phases of occupation and to different periods in the site’s history. The visit therefore shows how the same sacred space was reinterpreted by different communities over the centuries.
Antas and the Iglesiente
The temple fits easily into an Iglesiente itinerary including Fluminimaggiore, caves, mining landscapes and the west coast. It is especially rewarding for travellers who want to combine archaeology and nature.
