Asinara National Park
Asinara is a protected island off the north-west coast of Sardinia and one of Italy’s most distinctive national parks. Wildlife, former prison sites, small landing points and dramatic coastal scenery come together in a territory with no conventional towns or villages.
A protected island
The national park protects valuable terrestrial and marine environments. Access is regulated and visits must follow authorised routes, transport rules and the instructions of the park authority.
The white donkeys
The island’s best-known animal is the white donkey, found in several areas of the park. Wildlife should be observed without intrusive approaches and animals should never be fed.
The prison history
For more than a century, Asinara was associated with quarantine facilities, penal colonies and prisons. Fornelli and other areas preserve buildings that tell this story and add an important historical dimension to the island.
Cala Reale and island routes
Cala Reale is one of the island’s main reference points. From here, routes can be explored by authorised vehicles, bicycle or organised services, depending on current park regulations.
How to include Asinara in your trip
Asinara generally requires a full day. In the Trip Planner it should not be treated as a quick stop alongside Stintino or Porto Torres, but as the main experience of the day.
