Nuraghe Arrubiu
Nuraghe Arrubiu in Orroli is one of Sardinia's most monumental Nuragic complexes. Known as the Red Giant, it stands out for its imposing five-tower bastion and an elaborate system of courtyards, walls and secondary structures.
The Red Giant
The name refers to the reddish colour of the lichens covering parts of the stonework. The scale of the complex makes it one of the most impressive monuments of Nuragic civilisation.
The five-tower bastion
The central tower is surrounded by a bastion formed by five towers, an unusual configuration among known nuraghi. Additional defensive structures bring the overall number of towers in the complex to more than twenty.
Courtyards and interior spaces
Corridors, courtyards and chambers reveal the architectural complexity of the site. Excavations have uncovered material from several different phases of use.
The Sarcidano area
The nuraghe stands in a hilly landscape near the Flumendosa and other archaeological sites. Orroli is a useful base for exploring this part of central Sardinia.
Planning your visit
The site is outdoors and deserves enough time to explore properly. In summer, bring water and sun protection. Check current opening hours and guided-tour options before setting out.
