San Giovanni Cave
San Giovanni Cave is a large natural tunnel in the territory of Domusnovas, at the foot of the Marganai. A stream runs through the cavern and a historic road follows its main passage, creating an unusual way to experience the karst landscape of the Iglesiente.
A natural tunnel
The main passage extends for around 850 metres through the mountain. Large openings at both ends and the broad internal route make the cave immediately impressive.
The road through the cave
For many years, a vehicle road passed directly through the cavern. This rare feature shows how closely the cave became integrated into local transport and everyday life.
The San Giovanni stream
Water flows through the cave and has played a major role in shaping its interior. Flow levels and conditions vary through the year.
Marganai
Outside the cave, the forests and trails of the Marganai begin almost immediately. This makes it easy to combine the visit with a short nature walk without significant driving.
In the Trip Planner
The cave is a strong stop for nature and geology. It should be combined with Domusnovas or a light Iglesiente visit rather than with distant coastal destinations on the same day.
