Sanluri Castle

Sanluri Castle is one of Sardinia’s best-preserved medieval fortresses and the landmark monument of the town. Its history is closely tied to the conflict between the Judicate of Arborea and the Crown of Aragon, including the decisive battle fought in the area in 1409.

A fortress in the Campidano

Sanluri’s position on important routes across the Campidano plain made the castle strategically important during the Middle Ages. Its compact layout, walls and towers still clearly convey its original role as a fortress controlling the surrounding territory.

The Battle of Sanluri in 1409

Sanluri is associated with one of the decisive episodes in medieval Sardinian history. The battle of 1409 had a major impact on the conflict between Arborea and Aragon and remains part of local memory, including historical commemorations and re-enactments.

Inside the castle

The castle contains collections and museum rooms that explore not only its medieval history but also later phases of the building. Visiting the interiors gives useful context to the external fortifications and the strategic role of the site.

Sanluri town centre

The castle combines naturally with a walk through Sanluri. Its historic centre, churches and Campidano traditions can turn the visit into a rewarding half-day cultural stop rather than a quick photo opportunity.
