Su Fossu de Su Para: A Hidden Waterfall near Villaputzu
Hidden among the mountains of the Sarrabus, in the territory of Villaputzu, Su Fossu de Su Para is a little-known waterfall formed by the Rio Sa Buddidorgia. It is at its most impressive after periods of good rainfall, when the flow creates a dramatic natural scene in an otherwise quiet mountain landscape.
A waterfall over an unusual limestone formation
Su Fossu de Su Para is the river’s largest drop. Over time, mineral-rich water has deposited limestone and built up a large pyramidal formation beneath the cascade, sometimes compared to a mushroom or a “priest’s hat”.
A journey through local geology
The stream crosses the San Vito Sandstone formation and other ancient rocks of Paleozoic origin, giving the route an interesting geological dimension as well as its scenic appeal.
A demanding route
Reaching the waterfall can be complicated because part of the wider area is linked to the Salto di Quirra military range. After reaching the SS125 area, routes and access conditions must therefore be checked carefully before setting out. Where access is permitted, the approach continues on foot through rough terrain to this secluded natural site.
Advice for visitors
Good hiking shoes, sufficient water and reliable route information are essential. If possible, go with an experienced local guide or someone who knows the area well. Conditions can vary significantly after rain or during hot weather.
A remote nature experience
Su Fossu de Su Para is best suited to experienced nature lovers and hikers looking for a place far from the main tourist routes. Its appeal lies in the wild setting, unusual geology and sense of isolation rather than in easy access.
