Fonni

Fonni is one of the main centres of Barbagia and the highest village in Sardinia. Set at the foot of the Gennargentu mountains, it combines pastoral traditions, murals, archaeology and access to some of the island’s most important mountain landscapes.

Sardinia’s highest village

Fonni stands at around 1,000 metres above sea level and retains a distinctly mountain character. Its streets, stone houses and views of the Gennargentu set it apart from Sardinia’s coastal destinations.

Murals and traditions

Murals around the village depict scenes of everyday life, history and local identity. Festivals, traditional dress and pastoral customs remain central to Fonni’s culture.

Santa Maria dei Martiri

The basilica complex of Santa Maria dei Martiri is one of Fonni’s main religious monuments and preserves an important artistic heritage.

Gennargentu and snow

Fonni is one of the gateways to the Gennargentu mountains and the Bruncu Spina area. In winter the landscape is associated with snow, while the rest of the year offers hiking and mountain scenery.

Archaeology nearby

Gremanu, Madau and other sites reveal the area’s ancient past. In the Trip Planner, Fonni should be treated as a key destination for nature, traditions and archaeology rather than simply a stop along the way.
