Life in Sardegna

Town

Elini

With around 560 inhabitants, Elini is the smallest village in Ogliastra both by population and municipal area. Despite its compact size, the landscape is remarkably varied, including mountain, hilly and lowland areas rich in vegetation and natural springs. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers and anyone looking for a quiet break from city life.

Things to see in Elini

To experience the area's unspoilt nature, visit Parco Carmine, where centuries-old holm oaks, dense vegetation and clear springs create an excellent setting for a picnic. The park also contains the old Church of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, celebrated on 16 July. On this day a long procession accompanies the statue of the Virgin from the village centre to the Carmine church, while worshippers recite the rosary in Sardinian to the sound of the launeddas. After Mass, Su Cumbidu is held, a community refreshment where traditional sweets are offered.

The Trenino Verde in Elini

One of Elini's most distinctive features is its old granite railway station. The historic railway line still passes through the village and is used by the Trenino Verde, Sardinia's heritage train, offering journeys through some of the island's most remote inland landscapes and panoramic scenery.

Events in Elini

The S'Anguli de Cibudda festival, held on the first Sunday of August, is one of Elini's main celebrations and a chance to taste the local focaccia made with courgettes and onions. The event involves the whole community and visitors from nearby villages, with folk-group parades and tastings in old cellars where culurgiones, cheeses and local sweets are served.
