Bitti: Archaeology and Culture in the Heart of Sardinia
Bitti, in north-central Sardinia about 40 kilometres from Nuoro, is a picturesque village with a rich history and a culture deeply rooted in the traditions of Barbagia. Known for its nuragic heritage and its important role in dairy production, Bitti offers an authentic introduction to the inland Sardinia.
Canto a Tenore: UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage
Bitti is internationally renowned for canto a tenore, a traditional form of Sardinian polyphonic singing recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The village's Multimedia Museum of Canto a Tenore celebrates this expressive art and offers an insight into a musical tradition closely connected with Sardinia's farming and pastoral life.
Museum of Farming and Pastoral Life
The Museum of Farming and Pastoral Life, housed in a historic manor house in the village centre, explores the history of livestock farming and pecorino cheese production, both central to the local economy. Through its displays, visitors can discover the depth of Bitti's agricultural and pastoral roots.
The Nuragic Sanctuary-Village of Romanzesu
About 13 kilometres from the village, the nuragic sanctuary-village of Romanzesu is one of the area's most important traces of the Nuragic civilisation. Spread across seven hectares of woodland, the archaeological site includes around one hundred huts, temples, a sacred well and an enigmatic labyrinth, all built in granite.
Traditions and Festivals
Bitti keeps its traditions alive through events such as the medieval historical parade and Holy Week celebrations, with deeply felt processions and rituals. Patronal festivals including those dedicated to Nostra Signora del Miracolo and Santissimo Salvatore are major occasions for the local community.
Architecture and Landscape
Stone houses arranged in an amphitheatre pattern line narrow lanes that preserve the historic character of the village. At more than 500 metres above sea level, Bitti is surrounded by a scenic natural landscape that appeals to travellers interested in both nature and history.
