Discover Barumini and the Ancient Nuragic World of Su Nuraxi

Barumini, in the fertile Marmilla region, has a history stretching back to prehistory. Its most famous monument is Su Nuraxi, the largest and most important Nuragic complex in the area. This unique site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 and is one of the best places in Sardinia to understand the civilisation that built the island’s stone towers.

Two thousand years of history in volcanic stone

Built largely from basalt sourced from the nearby Giara plateau, Su Nuraxi preserves layers of occupation spanning roughly two millennia, from the 16th century BC to the 7th century AD. The central keep, begun in the Middle Bronze Age, is surrounded by four corner towers connected by a bastion. The settlement around it includes around 50 huts, wells and cisterns, offering an unusually detailed view of life in ancient Sardinia. Ritual spaces and later Iron Age houses show how the village and its architecture evolved over time.

Su Nuraxi ’e Cresia: Another Archaeological Treasure in Barumini

In the centre of Barumini, another Nuragic complex came to light during restoration work at Casa Zapata. The later noble residence was built directly above the ancient structure, creating an unusual archaeological setting. Today Casa Zapata houses a museum centre divided into archaeological, historical-archive and ethnographic sections.

Casa Zapata Museum: Archaeology, History and Ethnography

Casa Zapata, a 16th-century noble residence built over an ancient nuraghe, now houses one of Barumini’s key museums. Its archaeological, historical-archive and ethnographic sections provide a broader picture of local history, from Nuragic occupation through Punic and later periods.
