Montessu Necropolis
Montessu Necropolis is one of Sardinia’s largest pre-Nuragic funerary complexes. More than forty domus de janas are carved into a natural rock amphitheatre in the territory of Villaperuccio, creating an archaeological park of exceptional importance.
A major prehistoric necropolis
The tombs are distributed along the slopes of Sa Pranedda hill and vary in size and layout. The complex was used over a very long period of prehistory.
The domus de janas
Some of the rock-cut chambers reproduce features of domestic architecture and preserve symbols linked to funerary and ritual beliefs.
The landscape
The site overlooks the plain of the lower Sulcis. Its position makes the relationship between the necropolis, natural routes and the surrounding agricultural landscape particularly clear.
Prehistoric heritage
Montessu forms part of the Sardinian domus de janas system recognised by UNESCO in 2025, further strengthening the site’s international significance.
In the Trip Planner
Montessu is a major archaeological stop to combine with Villaperuccio and Santadi. It deserves enough time to explore properly rather than being squeezed into a day with too many other archaeological sites.
