Is Zuddas Caves
Is Zuddas Caves extend through Monte Meana in the territory of Santadi and are among the best-known show caves in south-west Sardinia. Their underground chambers contain spectacular mineral formations, including rare aragonite structures.
An ancient cave system
The caves formed inside very old dolomitic rock slowly shaped by water. The visitor route crosses different chambers where stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and other formations reveal the long processes of karst erosion and mineral deposition.
The eccentric aragonite formations
Is Zuddas is especially famous for its aragonite crystals, including spectacular helictite forms that grow in apparently gravity-defying directions. In some chambers these formations occur in particularly impressive concentrations.
The visitor route
The tourist route runs for several hundred metres through a sequence of underground chambers. Temperature and humidity remain very different from outside, so suitable clothing is useful even during summer.
Santadi and the Sulcis
The caves fit well into a Sulcis itinerary combining Santadi, nearby archaeological sites and the south-western coast. They are also a good alternative to a beach day and reveal a geological side of Sardinia that is often overlooked.
