Neptune’s Caves

Neptune’s Caves open at the foot of the Capo Caccia cliffs, in the territory of Alghero. Underground chambers, mineral formations and a large saltwater lake make the cave system one of the most visited natural attractions in north-west Sardinia.

A karst cave by the sea

The cave extends into the limestone headland and contains stalactites, stalagmites and large chambers shaped by water. Its direct connection with the sea gives the site an especially dramatic setting.

Access by land

From Capo Caccia, the entrance is reached via the Escala del Cabirol, a long staircase cut into the cliff. The descent offers spectacular views, but visitors should also allow for the climb back up.

Access by sea

When sea conditions are suitable, the caves can also be reached by boat from Alghero and other authorised departure points. Services may be suspended when the sea is rough.

Inside the caves

The visitor route passes through chambers, formations and Lake Lamarmora. Temperature and humidity differ from outside and surfaces can be slippery, so suitable footwear is recommended.

Capo Caccia and Porto Conte

Neptune’s Caves fit best into a day dedicated to Capo Caccia and Porto Conte. In the Trip Planner, they are a major attraction and can replace a beach stop when sea conditions are unsuitable.
