Great Mine of Serbariu

The Great Mine of Serbariu is one of the key places for understanding the coal-mining history of Carbonia and the Sulcis region. Active from 1937 to 1964, the complex has been restored and now hosts the Coal Museum, with exhibition spaces and an underground gallery accessible according to current visitor arrangements.

The mine and the birth of Carbonia

Development of the coalfield contributed directly to the foundation and rapid growth of Carbonia. Thousands of workers from different parts of Italy were employed at the complex.

The Coal Museum

The former lamp room displays documents, tools, lamps, photographs and personal accounts that illustrate life in the mine and in the city.

The underground gallery

The museum route recreates mining techniques and working environments using machinery and equipment. Access arrangements may change during maintenance or restoration work.

The winding-engine hall

The large machinery once used to operate the shaft cages helps visitors understand the scale and organisation of the mining complex.

In the Trip Planner

Serbariu is a substantial cultural stop to combine with Carbonia, Monte Sirai or inland Sulcis. It deserves more than a quick photo stop.
