Burgos Castle

Burgos Castle dominates the Goceano area from a granite hill above the village. Its strategic setting, walls and tower make it one of the most recognisable medieval monuments in inland Sardinia.

The hilltop fortress

The castle stands at more than 600 metres above sea level and overlooks a wide area. Its position once allowed control of important routes through Goceano.

Medieval history

The fortress is linked to the history of Sardinia's medieval giudicati and later struggles for control of the island's interior. Its role and ownership changed several times over the centuries.

The climb and the view

A rising path leads from the village to the castle. From the top, views open across the forests, hills and valleys of Goceano.

Burgos

The small village below the castle completes the visit and makes it easy to include the fortress in a route through Sardinia's inland towns and villages.

In the Trip Planner

The castle is a strong choice for history and panoramic views. Pair it with the Forest of Burgos for a balanced day combining culture and nature.
