Acquafredda Castle
Acquafredda Castle dominates the Cixerri valley from an isolated volcanic hill in the territory of Siliqua and is one of southern Sardinia’s most scenic medieval fortresses.
The fortress above the Cixerri valley
The castle occupies the summit of a solitary hill that once offered broad control over the surrounding territory. Its remains are distributed across different levels following the shape of the rock, with towers, walls and defensive structures still visible.
The connection with Count Ugolino
Acquafredda is associated with the della Gherardesca family and Count Ugolino, made famous by Dante. The fortress already existed in the early 13th century and later passed through different rulers as Sardinia’s medieval political landscape changed.
The visiting route
The climb to the castle is an important part of the experience. Paths cross Mediterranean scrub and rocky slopes to reach the different levels of the fortifications. From the top, views stretch across the Cixerri valley and large areas of southern Sardinia.
Nature and landscape
Acquafredda hill is also interesting from a natural and geological perspective. The site combines history, hiking and panoramic scenery, making it suitable for a visit of several hours away from the coast.
Tips before you go
The route includes uphill sections and requires suitable footwear, especially in hot weather. Check opening arrangements, services and current trail conditions before visiting.
