Basilica of San Gavino
The Basilica of San Gavino is Porto Torres’ most important religious monument and one of Sardinia’s major Romanesque buildings. Its large stone structure reflects the city’s long Christian history and is closely connected with the archaeological remains of ancient Turris Libisonis.
A major Romanesque basilica
The building is striking for its scale, elongated form and use of stone. Its medieval design is also unusual because it does not have the traditional front façade found in many churches.
The martyrs of Porto Torres
The basilica’s religious tradition is closely linked to the martyrs Gavino, Proto and Gianuario, whose cult played a central role in the history of Christianity in Porto Torres.
Crypt and archaeology
Underground spaces and the surrounding area preserve remains from different periods. A visit connects medieval architecture with early Christianity and the Roman history of the city.
Roman Porto Torres
Remains of ancient Turris Libisonis lie only a short distance away. The basilica and archaeological area form a natural combination for a cultural day in Porto Torres.
On the way to Asinara
Porto Torres is also one of the main gateways to Asinara. The basilica can therefore be visited before or after an island excursion without adding a major detour.
