Asinara: A Wild Island in North-West Sardinia

Asinara, off the far north-west coast of Sardinia, is one of the most distinctive and unspoilt islands in the Mediterranean. Isolated landscapes, rare plant and animal species and an unusual history have preserved a place that feels completely different from Sardinia’s busier coastal destinations.

Wild nature

Asinara’s wildlife and vegetation

The island’s hills, covered in Mediterranean vegetation, support distinctive wildlife including the famous white donkey, one of Asinara’s symbols. The island’s biodiversity has been protected by the national park since 1997 and by the surrounding marine protected area since 2002.

Beaches and seabeds

Asinara has small beaches and exceptionally clear water ranging from emerald green to turquoise. The protected marine environment supports rich underwater habitats, although all activities must follow current conservation rules.

An island of history and isolation

Traces of the past

Before becoming a national park, Asinara had an unusual history as a quarantine station, penal colony and high-security prison. Former institutional buildings, together with older remains such as the monastery of Sant’Andrea and Castellaccio, add an important historical layer to the island.

A preserved cultural landscape

Long periods of restricted access limited modern development and helped preserve the island’s wild character. Today visitors can explore Asinara through authorised bike routes, organised tours and other regulated activities while learning about the people and events that shaped its history.

Visiting Asinara

Outdoor experiences

Asinara is ideal for exploring isolated coves, open landscapes and areas where native wildlife can be observed in a protected setting. The surrounding sea also offers opportunities for authorised diving and marine excursions.

A protected heritage

Visiting the island means experiencing nature, history and conservation together. Respecting park rules is essential to protecting this fragile environment for the future.

Why visit Asinara

Asinara is more than a beach destination: it is a place where wild nature and complex history coexist. A day on the island offers a very different perspective on Sardinia and is best approached as a full-day experience rather than a quick stop.
